Zimbabwe May Become Next Country to Legalize MMJ Production

Authorities in Zimbabwe, Africa, are discussing the possibility of legalizing medical marijuana in several areas of the country. The government initiated the legalization discussions after a Canadian company had shown interest in growing and processing medical weed in Zimbabwe. Cultivating cannabis in the country might bring significant economic growth and numerous benefits to the nation.

The Binga region in western Zimbabwe is known for extensive marijuana cultivation. Here, up to 10 grams of pot can be purchased for 1,800 ZWD (5,00 USD). Top-quality cannabis comes in from the neighboring countries, including Mozambique and Malawi.

Dr. Obert Mpofu, the country’s Macro-Economic Planning and Investment Promotion Minister, has recently announced that a Canadian conglomerate has expressed the desire to cooperate with the government of Zimbabwe in the production of medical marijuana.

The Canadian cannabis company, which has not yet been identified, is planning to set up production in a new special economic zone (SEZ) in Zimbabwe. Operating a business in a SEZ is a legal way to avoid certain labor laws and restrictions. Such economic zones are currently being established in Bulawayo, Harare, and Victoria Falls. According to Dr. Mpofu, the country has already received numerous inquiries from foreign investors, including an international company, to become involved in cannabis production. The minister assures that the government of Zimbabwe is not taking this matter lightly and wants to review the issue carefully. He also believes that the cooperation with the Canadian company would be perfectly safe as the firm makes their medical cannabis under strict regulations and ensures compliance with all cannabis laws and standards.
