AXIM Biotech Patents Marijuana-Infused Chewing Gum Products

Those people who would rather ingest marijuana than smoke it have plenty of options. From marijuana-infused pasta sauce to vegan caviar to chewing gum – the edibles market is huge. Apart from the fact that this November, voters in eight states have legalized pot for recreational purposes and in several more states ballot measure cleared the way for medical cannabis.

While the drug remains illegal under federal law, one pharmaceutical company patented cannabis chewing gum.

AXIM Biotech announced that it has received a Notice of Allowance from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for a marijuana chewing gum patent that will cover “the use of all cannabinoids in cannabinoid-containing controlled-release chewing gum products.” The new patent covers the inclusion of all cannabinoids, both natural and synthetic, in a chewing gum delivery system, all of which may be incorporated in the company's chewing gum products. THC, marijuana's best-known psychoactive constituent, also is included into a list of compounds allowed to be used in the product manufacturing.

Big Pharma Meets Medical Marijuana

AXIM Biotechnologies Inc, Manhattan-based company with ties to the Netherlands, has already manufactured a high-CBD gum called CanChew. It is a non-GMO, gluten-free, vegan and kosher great-tasting mint gum with no artificial sweeteners or preservatives. The product is already present on the retail market in all 50 states and can be legally purchased where CBD products are allowed to be sold.

Also, the company is currently conducting clinical trials on a new product called MedChew RX gum, a THC-infused chewing gum, for patients with multiple sclerosis, Crohn's disease, and irritable syndrome. While existing oral therapies are mostly high-priced, offer limited relief from pain and spasticity, and have various side effects, MedChew RX gum is designed to provide more consistent relief than artisanal products derived from marijuana. The gum is on track to be fully registered by the FDA and EMA.

Another AXIM product, called CanChew Plus CBD containing gum, is aimed to improve delivery system and doses of 30 mg and 10 mg of CBD.

Chew On This

Although the idea of marijuana-infused gum is not a new discovery, AXIM Biotech claims that their product differs from all currently present in the market: it is time released so that the distribution cannabinoids to the gastrointestinal tract happens gradually over a period of about thirty minutes. This process is similar to the technology behind nicotine gum.

The psychoactive ingredient called THC is known to be an effective treatment of many debilitating conditions, both degenerative and neurological. Additionally, chewing the gum is said to preserve memory and cognition, promote overall dental and gum health, and increase salivary flow which helps neutralize the acids produced when food is broken down by the bacteria in plaque on your teeth. The manufacturers think that cannabis in the form of a chewing gum is more socially acceptable than the traditional methods of consuming the drug, such as smoking or vaping.
