Puerto Rico Opens First Medical Marijuana Dispensaries

Puerto Rico has officially opened two medical cannabis dispensaries. Hundreds of patients suffering from a variety of conditions will now have access to new effective treatment options that include medical marijuana. Although the territory’s policy on cannabis still has much more restrictions than some American states, Puerto Rico is on the right way to creating a successful and versatile cannabis market.

Two medical marijuana dispensaries have recently opened near San Juan, the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico. More than 2,000 registered patients can now obtain their medical cannabis in the new stores. As the new dispensaries are the first of their kind in Puerto Rico, they will need to meet all the requirements and restrictions of Puerto Rico’s medical marijuana policy in order to set the bar for future similar establishments.

The legislation on medical cannabis in Puerto Rico has allowed using weed in vaporizers and inhalers, as well as in the form of oral drops, pills, patches, and creams since 2015. However, cultivating and smoking cannabis is still illegal.

Patients suffering from different serious diseases, including arthritis, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, and Alzheimer’s can apply for medical marijuana prescriptions. Although the number of conditions is still limited, many people hope the new developing cannabis market will loosen the restrictions and widen the list of qualifying ailments.

According to the recent reports, 23 businesses have already been approved for growing, processing, and distributing medical marijuana. With so many new companies entering the cannabis industry, many more dispensaries are likely to be opened in the near future.

Thousands of people now have the opportunity to improve their quality of life and receive a modern and effective medical treatment.

Moreover, Puerto Rico will certainly benefit from the fully-functioning medical marijuana market and have a new powerful source of revenue to cover the territory’s $70 billion public debt.
