The Liberal government has
set a preliminary timeline of Canada's legalization of
recreational weed. The new law that is to be adopted next month will
ensure marijuana legalization in the country by July 1, 2018,
according to CBC News.
Currently, the Canadian marijuana laws permit weed only for medical use, but the Liberal government is working hard on the development of recreational marijuana laws.
The officials announced on Sunday that the new legislation regulating the legalization of recreational weed in Canada would be introduced during the week of April 10. However, in a different source, it was indicated that the initiative would be announced on April 20, the national holiday of the marijuana culture.
The bill is expected to take force on July 1, 2018. The Liberals assure that they will be able to stick to the announced marijuana legalization timeline.
The initiative will allow Canadian residents aged 18 and over to purchase, possess, and cultivate marijuana for recreational use. At the same time, the provinces will have the right to set a higher age limit at their discretion.
The federal government is going to ensure the safety and security of the drug supply, as well as facilitate the licensing of marijuana producers.
Meanwhile, the provinces will regulate weed distribution and sale. The price policy will also be controlled by the provincial governments.
Those consumers who want to cultivate marijuana will be allowed to legally grow up to four weed plants per household.
To make Canada legalize weed was one of the most controversial promises of Justin Trudeau's campaign for the position of prime minister. Many young voters have already expressed distrust in his promise to introduce legislation by this spring, but it looks like the Liberals are going to meet that deadline.
However, Trudeau has clearly underlined that until the new bill is adopted, the current Canadian marijuana laws apply. His words have been recently confirmed by the police raids on dispensaries during which two famous cannabis advocates Marc and Jodie Emery were arrested for pot possession and trafficking.
